Insulation Services Offered
OPEN-CELL SPRAY FOAM INSULATION
Open-cell spray foam is full of air-filled cells that aren’t completely encapsulated. This makes the foam a softer, more flexible material, more similar in texture and strength to what you would picture if you thought of foam. The open-cell spray foam material has a lower R-Value per inch than the closed-cell option, and so it isn’t as energy efficient. However, it does have its benefits, as it is a great sound barrier and it is the most affordable spray foam option we offer.
CLOSED-CELL SPRAY FOAM INSULATION
Closed-cell spray foam is made of very high density closed-cells. Unlike open-cell spray foam cells, the cells in closed-cell spray foam are fully encapsulated and filled with gas, as opposed to air. The gas filled cells allow the foam to expand to fill gaps, which eliminates the breaks in insulation you normally encounter with conventional insulation products. The finished product is hard, which provides the added benefit of providing additional strength to any structure it is applied to. The R-Value of closed-cell spray foam is also the highest of all the insulation materials we offer.
TRADITIONAL FIBERGLASS SHEET INSULATION
This type of insulation will never create a complete barrier to heat or air flow, but will provide some R-Value, albeit much lower than the foam alternatives, and some sound proofing as well. Fiberglass sheet insulation can last several years but during that time its effectiveness is gradually lost. Spray foam on the other hand, can last more than 80 years! You will pay more for initial installation, but the overall efficiency, coupled with its strength and longevity, make it the better investment.
What is R-VALUE OF INSULATION?
You will hear us using the term “R-Value” at your energy analysis consultation. It sounds complicated, but it really isn’t. The R-Value of any type of insulation represents it’s capacity to resist heat flow. Simply put, the higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating power of the material. Different parts of your property (walls, crawlspaces, attics, etc.) will have different required R-Values in order to achieve maximum efficiency. In Virginia, exterior walls require an R-Value of between R-13 to R-20. Floors require R-19. For ceilings and attics however, R-38 is required, as these are the areas where heat escapes the most. You can accomplish the same R-Value with different materials, but the amount of material used may differ, if for example 1 inch of a more efficient material gets you to the same R-Value as 4 inches of another.

EVERY PROPERTY
IS DIFFERENT, AND EACH
RECOMMENDATION IS UNIQUE
We don’t treat every property the same. Your energy analysis will be unique and specific to your needs. The above is meant to provide an overview, so that you are more knowledgeable going into the process, than you would have been otherwise. Most of our projects involve a combination of insulation products, and it is our job to talk your through where and how your money will be best spent to maximize your efficiency and savings. At the end of the day, choosing to invest the insulation of your property will be a great decision. Regardless of the mix of products, you will benefit from lower utility bills for both heating and cooling, and you will enjoy many of the other benefits we have discussed as well!
